Give Without Remembering

By Adriel Yapana | Last Updated: 28 August 2026

Tonight I stood outside the rec center in Elysian Valley and watched the earth's shadow take a bite out of the moon.Partial. Not the full show.

A curve of dark creeping across one side while the rest of it stayed bright. There were other people out there doing the same thing.

Strangers. A few phones up, all of them, all getting the same useless photo, a small white smudge that looks nothing like what's actually happening over your head.

Nobody sold anything to anybody. Nobody had a funnel for it.

The best thing I saw all month was free, and it belonged to everyone standing in that grassy field.

Here's the part I couldn't stop thinking about.

The moon has never made a single ray of light in its life.

Not one. Everything it gives you, it got first.

It's been handing out borrowed light every night for as long as there have been nights, and it has never once asked to be paid or thanked or credited.

"Always give without remembering and always receive without forgetting." — Brian Tracy.

That's the whole thing.

And most of us run it backwards.

We give with a receipt in our pocket.

Three free posts.

A free guide.

A long answer in the DMs.

And then the quiet math starts up in the background — I've given a lot here. When does this pay?

You can hear it in the next email. The tone tightens.

The ask gets heavier. It turns out the generosity was a down payment.

People feel that. They felt it before you hit send.

Giving without remembering means you hand over the real answer, not the teaser version. You help the person who's never going to buy from you.

You do it again tomorrow. And you don't keep score, because everything you know you got from somebody else first anyway. You're reflecting light. You didn't make it.

Then there's the shadow.

Because that's what an eclipse actually is — a night when the light gets taken and there's nothing you can do but stand there and watch it go.

You know that stretch. You give and give, and the thing goes dark.

No sales, no replies, no sign that any of it landed.

The shadow isn't a verdict on the moon. It's just where things are for a couple of hours. It comes back. It always comes back. Now the half I'm worse at.

Receive without forgetting.I didn't earn one second of what I watched tonight. I just showed up in a parking lot, and it was handed to me.

Somebody did that for you, too, early on, when you had nothing to give back.

They paid before you had proof. They shared your work without mentioning it.

They replied on the week you were closest to quitting.

My Dad, Nelson, for example, he would show up on moving day for a family or friend. Every single time. He'd be there at seven in the morning with the car and his back, help carry the heaviest thing in or out of the house... just to help another person out.

There are fewer than a hundred people on this list. I know exactly what that means, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

It also means every one of you chose this on purpose — a small enough number to remember properly, and I intend to.

So here's marketing with the tactics stripped off it: Give like nobody owes you.

Remember like everybody did. That's slower than it sounds. It'll look like nothing is happening for a while — that's the gap, and the gap is normal.

Stand out there anyway.

In your corner,

Adriel

P.S. It was a partial. I didn't get the whole thing. Partial is what you usually get, and it's still worth walking outside for.
